Providence Earth Day http://vinegarhillhouse.com/generic/ Spring Cleaning 2013

Saturday, April 20th

PROVIDENCE, RI – The City of Providence is hosting the first annual city-wide celebration of Earth Day, a day dedicated to cleaning up green spaces and neighborhoods and celebrating the community groups that make Providence’s public spaces vibrant.

From 9:00am to 12:00pm, over 1500 volunteers are expected to join one of over 30 community groups cleaning up a park, planting trees or beautifying a neighborhood by registering at www.ServeRhodeIsland.org.

From 12:30pm to 4:30pm, volunteers from the morning events will join Mayor Angel Taveras at the Roger Williams Park Temple to Music for a special thank you lunch and celebration.  Performers will include: Biscuit City, Jay Feinstein and the Furnace of Love, the Mosby Blues Band, and singer/songwriter Matt Fraza. Local environmental organizations will also be there to share their work.

Volunteers who show their “Earth Day Spring Cleaning 2013 Volunteer” buttons will receive a complimentary lunch at the celebration, free rides on RIPTA (on the 20th), free admission to the Roger Williams Park Zoo, The Natural History Museum, and Roger Williams Park Botanical Center on Saturday, April 27, and a chance to win tickets to WBRU’s Earth Day Concert.

In addition to the clean ups and celebration, the City of Providence will provide a free community shredding event also on Saturday, April 20 from 9:00am-1:00pm at Hope High School, 324 Hope Street. Providence residents can bring up to 2 boxes per household of personal sensitive documents, where the City’s partner, Shred-It, will properly destroy and recycle the material.

Providence Earth Day 2013 is planned in collaboration with Serve Rhode Island, the Partnership for Providence Parks, the Narragansett Bay Estuary Program and Roger Williams Park Conservancy and will highlight the important role that volunteer groups have in making the city’s parks and neighborhoods great places to play, gather and explore.

For a full listing of events, including activity details and locations, visit www.ServeRhodeIsland.com or www.providenceparks.org.
